This week we travel to Microsoft’s campus in San Francisco for Startup Weekend San Francisco. Startup Weekend recruits a highly motivated group of developers, business managers, startup enthusiasts, marketing gurus, graphic artists and more to a 54 hour event that builds communities, companies and projects. Founded in 2007 by Andrew Hyde, the weekend is a concept of a conference focusing on learning by creating. It is known for its quick decisions, ‘out of the box’ thinking (oh no, the buzzwords are attacking!), unique facilitation technique and letting the founders show what they can do. The program has already met with success in Boulder, Toronto, New York, Hamburg, Houston, West Lafayette, Boston, DC and more. In this episode we talk to Founder Andrew Hyde, and San Francisco Leader Tyler Willis.

The Ustream Studio will combine the ideas and music at the heart of SXSW with the interactive power of live streaming. A free high-profile event open to the public and produced by nicefishfilms, no wristband is required for entry.

The Ustream Studio will showcase musicians, journalists, futurists, artists and thought leaders at The Belmont, 305 W. Sixth St., Austin, Texas. Whether enjoying the events locally or from across the world, Ustream will power all events live on Ustream.TV, the leading internet broadcasting platform that allows anyone with a camera and an internet connection to live stream.

Participants of the Ustream Studio from March 13 to 21 include Grammy® Best New Artist of the Year Adele, Peter Himmelman, Indigo Girls, Manchester Orchestra, The Von Bondies and Glasvegas.

With Ustream’s easy embed tools, users can share any of the live streams, allowing any website to host these compelling concerts and panels. For more information, visit www.ustream.tv/sxsw or the live stream at www.ustream.tv/channel/ustream-studio, or follow us on Twitter: http://twitter.com/UstreamSXSW.

“Our intent is to create a space for big ideas to grow,” said Michael Sean Wright, founder of nicefishfilms and director of the Ustream Studio. “Ustream Studio is a phenomenal space to experience the excitement and collaboration that defines SXSW. An event on this scale -available to viewers across the globe, for free- is revolutionary to me.”

“The Ustream Studio underscores our vision to help people share moments and experiences with each other,” said Brad Hunstable, co-founder and president of Ustream. “We’re thrilled to be a partner in this event that integrates the power of live video with top-notch entertainment and talent.”

Offering a full range of food and drinks, the Belmont features a retro atmosphere with period furnishings, vintage fixtures, dark woods and design touches that evoke the glamorized 1960s era of Kennedy, Sinatra and Monroe.

About Ustream TV

Ustream.TV is the live interactive video broadcast platform that enables anyone with a camera and an Internet connection to quickly and easily broadcast to a global audience of unlimited size. In less than two minutes, anyone can become a broadcaster by creating their own channel on Ustream or by broadcasting through their own site, empowering them to engage with their audience and further build their brand. Uniea’s cases and accessories are available through the Barnes & Noble website at books.com, and are featured in both the home and gift sections under the “electronics” categories. To date, this strategic partnership between the two companies has been highly successful, netting impressive U.S. sales results for Uniea in the first quarter of 2009.

The addition of Barnes & Noble as a key sales partner for Uniea follows the company’s steady and impressive efforts in recent months to significantly expand its exposure to various markets globally and forge new distribution alliances with key vendors. Earlier in the year, Uniea announced new ties with both Navarre and Tech Data, two of the largest distributors of consumer electronic products, as well as with the Japanese distributor Focal Point (site in Japanese).

Given the fact that Barnes & Noble remains one of the most popular and successful online retail stores, sales in the U.S. are expected to climb throughout the fiscal year 2009, according to a Uniea spokesperson.

The new version will apparently be available for download tomorrow, January 6, 2009, from Skype’s website.

Here’s the quick list of what Skype notes is in this release:

Skype Access

Screen Sharing

Improved chat management: ability to sort chats in the drawer and set priorities to chats

Quick Add: much easier to add people to chats

Mood message chat: mood message updates from your friends as chat messages

Large avatars: 256×256 pixels

Hidden avatars in incoming contact requests

Ability to add your own notes to contacts

Skype Access is a worldwide, pay-per-minute WiFi hotspot access service provided by Boingo Wireless and enabled by Skype. Skype Access allows Skype users to connect to any of the more than 100,000 Boingo WiFi hotspots worldwide – including airports, hotels, cafes and metropolitan hot zones – with a single click, and to pay per minute only for what they use with Skype Credit.

The price to use Skype Access to connect to a Boingo WiFi hotspot is based on a flat, global rate of $0.19/€0.14 per minute (€0.16/$0.22 incl. VAT), which will vary based on currency. There are no connection fees or monthly charges for Skype Access.

The new screen sharing function in Skype 2.8 Beta for Mac enables you to show others something you are working on or to explain how to do something. Similar to a Skype video call, it works by capturing, encrypting and transferring the content of your screen in real-time to the person you are sharing your screen with. Once there, the content is decrypted and shown to the other person on their screen. If you are using Skype 2.8 Beta for Mac, you are also able to share your screen with Skype for Windows and Skype for Linux users, but cannot see theirs (yet).

Tomorrow, I will download the test out Skype 2.8 Beta for Mac, if all goes according to plan at Skype.
